The Afro Hair and Beauty Bible
PRECIOUS catches up Alison Husbands, the author of The Afro Hair and Beauty Bible, a new book that focuses on hair and skin-care alongside make-up tips and techniques
for women of colour...
PRECIOUS: How long did it take to complete The Afro Hair and Beauty Bible?
Alison: I spent close to 3 years researching Afro hair and testing products and techniques.
Did you have a publisher?
I choose to self publish as this allowed me greater control of what I create.
How has the book been received since launch?
My book has gone down very well; my sales are growing week to week!
What methods have you used to promote the book?
Every method possible, my book has just been reviewed by Black Beauty & Hair (August/September issue). I have also just had a live radio interview last week with New Style Breakfast Show on 98.7fm and a few more features coming out soon.
What was the most difficult thing about the from 'draft to published' process?
Editing, choosing what goes in and what is saved for my next book.
What beauty looks and trends are on your radar for summer 2010?
Soft hair styles that require as little heat as possible.
Who are your beauty icons?
Tracee Ellis Ross; from Girlfriends. I love her style!
How would you describe your personal beauty style in five words?
Simple, colorful, chic, unique and works for my figure.
Away from the writing, what else do you do?
I studied Architecture and Design during my years in higher education, I now freelance as a designer and stylist, I am now working on my make-up artistry skills.
So what's next for you?
I will be working on my next book soon and a few other new projects
that I hope to bring to the market in the near future.

Fight the frizz with Moroccanoil

It's the time of year when the summer heat and humidity can wreak havoc
on our tresses, am I right? If like me you woke up to a head of frizz and
tangles, then you'll love the miracle product I'm about to share with you.
Moroccanoil¨ has been taking the global hair salon industry by storm and
UK Afro hair experts such as Errol Douglas have been quick to catch on
to the benefits of its powerful antioxidant formula.
I was introduced to the Original
Moroccanoil¨ Oil Treatment back in February
by my hair stylist. She treated my tresses to a steam treatment using the
ultra-light formula. I could feel and see the difference immediately. My
hair felt silky soft and after blow drying it had a gorgeous shine, that
usually takes a generous
application of oil sheen to achieve.
I now keep a bottle of Moroccanoil¨
Oil Treatment at home and it has many
uses; from a quick treatment on damp hair, to a dabble on the dry ends,
I love that it's multipurpose - eliminating the need to have a box full
of products. Oh and it smells divine too!
The Moroccanoil¨ blend is rich
in vitamins and natural elements that fortify the hair, including Vitamin
F (Omega 6), Vitamin A to improve elasticity,
Vitamin E to protect against free-radicals, and Phenols to shield against
environmental stressors. So today when I saw that my hair was looking more
'desperado' than 'va-va-voom', I reached for the trusty Oil treatment and
gently massaged a coin size
amount onto my scalp, teasing the roots and working it down to the ends.
Then using a wide tooth comb, I worked out the tangles and in no time at
all, my hair was looking nourished, silky and most importantly, it was
easy to style. On a day like today, this is one product I can't live without.
Moroccanoil¨ Oil Treatment retails
at £29.85 and is available online at
www.hqhair.com. For more information on the brand, visit: http://www.moroccanoil.com
